Foreign Ministry: UNSC’s Reputation At Stake

DAMASCUS, (ST) – “Damascus witnessed a series of terrorist bombings on Thursday, the most deadliest  of which was the terrorist bombing which hit al-Thawra St. near al-Mazraa neighborhood and claimed the lives of 53 martyrs and  dozens wounded . Most of the victims are women and children as there was a school nearby, “

These remarks made by the Foreign and Expatriates Ministry which addressed two identical letters to the President of the UN Security Council and the UN Secretary General on terrorist bombings which hit Damascus City on Thursday.

The competent authorities seized  a suicide bomber whose car was  packed with  tons of explosives.

“these terrorist acts coincide with targeting a number of residential buildings and sports facilities as happened last  Wednesday  when the Tishreen Sports Complex  was hit by  mortar shells, causing the martyrdom of footballer  Youssef Suleiman and injuring others, ‘added the ministry.

“Today’s terrorist bombings are but a continuation of the terrorist acts not only in Damascus  but also across Syria. Those acts were carried out  by al-Qaeda-linked armed terrorist groups which are backed financially  and logistically rather than enjoying  media and political coverage from regional and foreign countries, “asserted the ministry.

“Syria hopes  the UN Security Council will be able to adopt a firm stance which proves its commitment to combating terrorism regardless of its timing or place, ‘said the ministry.

“a clear  condemnation of this terrorist act by the UN Security Council will be a strong indication  to the terrorist groups and those who back  them that there are no double standards in tackling  terrorist crimes elsewhere, “underlined  the ministry.

“But if the UNSC turns a blind eye to this terrorist act just as it did previously, It will deepen  doubts in its seriousness in combating terrorism and its commitment to implementing its resolutions in this regard, “underscored the ministry.

“terrorism will not prevent Syria  from defending its citizens and Syria will continue combating terrorism in line with exerting more efforts to implement its political program to solve the current crisis through  dialogue among all Syrians,” the ministry concluded.
