Rehabilitating government irrigation projects in Deir Ezzor contributes to increasing wheat production

Resuming work in the government irrigation projects in the Syrian province of Deir Ezzor has contributed to an increase in the agricultural lands planted with wheat, Syria’s strategic crop and the most important agricultural product in this province, Director of Deir Ezzor Agriculture As’ad Toukan has stated.

In a statement to SANA on Wednesday, Toukan said that the agricultural land in Deir Ezzor extends over an area of 45,000 hectares, of which 22,000 hectares are planted with wheat, while the area of land that was planted with wheat and is covered by government irrigation projects is more than 10,000 hectares, due to the availability of regular supplies of irrigation water.

The government irrigation projects in Deir Ezzor resumed work after they were rehabilitated due to damage caused to them by terrorist groups’ attacks.

The return of these projects greatly supports agriculture in this province, according to Director of Operation and Maintenance in the Lower Euphrates Basin Hussein Hamdan.
