“Syrian bees” an exhibition of recycling fabrics of our ancestors
The exhibition “Syrian Bees” for recycling of used fabrics opened on Monday evening at the Arab Cultural Center in El-Adawi in Damascus.The exhibition displayed about 100hand-made fabric pieces, which are made with needle and thread .More than forty-five women participated ,aiming to revive the Syrian heritage.
Farah Souqieh, a trainer said to Syria times (e- newspaper) the aim of the exhibition is to make familiarize people with the handmade works of the trainees in the beehive project.
“We train women in several centers in different areas including Dummar al-Mazzeh, Qudsaya, and a number of governorates, as Suwayda and Tartous. We held several exhibitions to show the heritage of our ancestors in a modern and developed way,” she added.
Dr. “Sahar Al-Baseer”, the director of the “Beehives” project, said:”We started this project since 2013to teach women how to use old clothes and recycle them to achieve embroidery sheets and pillows “. “We tried to revive and develop this craft which was about to vanish.We aim to revive this heritage I order to help women to support themselves financially, and revive the heritage of our ancestors – the most famous craft is called the “Quilt “.
Sara Naqasheh, participated in two exhibitions. She learned this craft to fill her time she participated in this exhibition to display her works, and familiarize others with her experiences.
Another participant, Osima Al- Masri, displayed handmade embroidered bed sheets and pillows. She wanted to show her pieces to the visitors in order to market them.
Malka Al Masri, a trainer in the beehive project since 2017 displayed embroidery works.
