The United Nations calls on the Yemeni parties to extend the armistice

The United Nations has called on all parties in Yemen to extend the current truce, which expires next week.

“We have seen the positive effects of the truce on the daily lives of Yemenis, so the parties must renew it to ensure the continuity and enhancement of these benefits for the Yemeni people, who have long suffered for more than seven years as a result of the war,” AFP quoted the United Nations envoy to Yemen, Hans Grundberg, as saying in a statement today. ”

Grundberg stressed that the truce provided a window to break the cycle of violence and suffering to move towards a peaceful future in Yemen, and the parties should seize this opportunity.

Grundberg’s statements came with the start of consultations in the Jordanian capital, Amman, between the Yemeni parties regarding the opening of roads in the city of Taiz, southwest of Yemen.

On the second of last April, a UN-brokered truce entered into force, to last for two months. The agreement includes allowing commercial flights from Sanaa International Airport, which has been open only for aid flights since 2016.
