Increasing expansion and new areas for planting the Damascene Rose

Damascus (ST): The cultivation of the Damascene rose is witnessing an increasing expansion with the encouragement of the Ministry of Agriculture and Agrarian Reform and the support of the Syrian Trust for Development, through the reclamation of new areas for cultivation in most governorates due to its remunerative economic return.

Director of Plant Production at the Ministry of Agriculture and Agrarian Reform, Engineer Ahmed Haider Bin, told a news reporter that the area planted with the Damascene rose in Syria amounted to about 350 hectares, distributed over 265 hectares in the Damascus Countryside Governorate.
In Aleppo, the cultivated areas are 65 hectares and spread in Neirab, Aran, Baraa and Deir Hafer, and they constitute 19 percent of the cultivated area at the level of Syria, while they reach 20 hectares in the governorates of Hama, Homs, Sweida and Lattakia and constitute 5 percent of the cultivated areas, which are constantly expanding.
Regarding the areas planned to be planted with the Damascene Rose, Haidar indicated that the ministry, in coordination with the Syrian Trust for Development, is working to reclaim lands that can be expanded, explaining that these areas amount to 4110 hectares in the Damascus countryside, of which about 500 hectares have been reclaimed, pointing out that there is a future reclamation plan that includes 10,000 hectares  within five years, starting from the beginning of 2023.
