Syria, Serbia sign MoU on agricultural cooperation

Syria and Serbia on Saturday signed a Memorandum of Understanding on agricultural cooperation.

The memo provides for supporting and enhancing cooperation in agricultural scientific research, up-to-date technologies in agriculture, biotechnologies, organic farming, aquaculture and developing quality policies in agriculture.

The memo, which was signed for the Syrian side by Minister of Agriculture and Agrarian Reform Mohammad Hassan Qatana and by Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Water Economy Branislav Nedimovic for the Serbian side, also provides for implementing projects of common benefit with the aim of addressing basic issues and the priorities of the agricultural sector. It calls for giving particular attention to localizing the chains of agricultural production and manufacturing in order to increase the value added of agricultural products.

The Syrian minister stressed the need to boost trade exchange between Syria and Serbia, noting the laws and the instructions regulating the agricultural and veterinary quarantines, which are the core of trade exchange determinants.

On his part, the Serbian minister expressed his country’s willingness to enhance trade exchange with Syria, affirming the need to upgrade economic, agricultural and trade relations between the two friendly countries to the level of the political ones.

Qatana and the accompanying delegation took part in the opening ceremony of the 89th edition of the International Agricultural Fair, currently held in the Serbian city of Novi Sad. 1,100 exhibitors from 21  countries are taking part in this fair, which is one of the largest and most important agribusiness events in the region.
