Russia: Sweden and Finland joining NATO will change cooperation between Arctic countries

Moscow (ST): The Ambassador for Special Missions in the Russian Foreign Ministry Nikolai Korchunov announced that the accession of Sweden and Finland to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) may lead to adjustments in the development of Arctic cooperation.

RIA Novosti news agency quoted Korchunov, who is also chairman of the Committee of Senior Officials of the Arctic Council, as telling reporters today: “A change in the military and political situation of countries can introduce some adjustments to the development of cooperation in the high latitudes.”

He stressed the need to consider the issue of Finland’s and Sweden’s accession to NATO from the point of view of how this would affect the mutual trust between the Arctic states and their public institutions.

It is noteworthy that Finland and Sweden submitted formal applications yesterday to join the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).
