Al-Miqdad reviews with Msuya the humanitarian work of UN and its agencies in Syria

DAMASCUS, May.18, (ST)- The Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Faisal Al-Miqdad discussed this morning with the Assistant Secretary-General of the United Nations for Humanitarian Affairs Joyce Msuya and her accompanying delegation, the role of the UN in the humanitarian response to the situation in Syria, the activities carried out by the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Aid (OCHA) and international organizations working in humanitarian affairs and various aspects of humanitarian work carried out by the UN and its agencies in Syria.
 
According to the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA), Al-Miqdad expressed his disapproval of the western countries’ politicization of humanitarian aid for political goals. 
 
He affirmed the importance of adherence to the principles of humanitarian work in Syria and commitment to neutrality and independence, which contributes to ensuring basic services and delivering aid to the real beneficiaries inside Syria within the framework of full respect for Syria’s sovereignty. and territorial integrity in accordance with relevant UN Security Council resolutions.
 
The minister spoke about the inhumane effects of the unilateral coercive measures being imposed by the United States and its Western allies on the Syrian people, calling on the UN to exert its efforts to put an end to these measures, which contradict the UN  Charter the international law.
 
“These measures are not only against the Syrian government’s efforts to ensure medicines, medical equipment, water and basic services, but they are also against the Syrian people, whose suffering has increased as a result of these immoral policies that contradict international law and the UN Charter as they affect the performance of the United Nations’ humanitarian tasks in Syria,” Al-Miqdad clarified. 
 
For her part, Msuya emphasized her interest in ensuring the necessary funding for humanitarian work in Syria .She said that Syria is among the priorities of humanitarian work in the United Nations. She thanked the Syrian government for the facilities it provides for the success of the work of the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, adding that she is looking forward to improving work mechanisms in a way that leads to strengthening cooperation and coordination in all these areas.
 
She pointed out that her visit to Syria comes within the framework of her keenness to closely review the relief efforts and response carried out by the UN there and to reach conclusions based on facts with the aim of developing a realistic vision for the needs of the Syrian people.
 
Msuya asserted her readiness to discuss with the Syrian Government the difficulties which face the work of humanitarian organizations in Syria with the aim of reaching a common vision to overcome the obstacles that hinder the humanitarian work in Syria and put it aside from political considerations.
