100 Students Complete Work on The Environmental Garden Project at Al-Baath University

Students and professors of the Faculty of Agriculture at Al-Baath University in Homs have been continuously  working on the green spaces within the campus in the framework of the ecological garden project, which was launched last year to beautify the university’s site through rehabilitating the inner garden of the Faculty of Agriculture, where the project is being completed today by planting the southern wall of the university.

The goal of the project is to improve the aesthetic view of the university and take advantage of the uncultivated areas. Work began on the garden, with an area of 650 square meters, last year.  At the beginning of the current academic year, the garden was expanded from the southern wall of the university, with a continuous increase in its area every year to double the university’s green spaces.
The expansion towards the southern wall of the university, which is about 2 km long, gives an additional space to train students and provide them with experience in the processes of cultivation, harvesting as well as identifying the types of trees and plants that exist as a practical application for some courses in the first, second and third years that include ecological agriculture. The fence is planted with fruit trees and some pastoral plants in order to achieve the scientific, practical and aesthetic aspects for the university.
Ecological and botanical gardens on university campuses are important to conduct scientific research and provide for a mini-research center for students of agriculture and the scientific staff. At the beginning of the second semester of this year, about 100 students participated in working on the garden, which included the cultivation of 165 species of trees and plants.
The project provides for space enough to apply the practical aspect in the College of Agriculture and to develop a lot of experiences and knowledge among students in the field of farming, weeding and planting forest and fruitful shrubs.
