18 male and female students from the Syrian governorates participate in the Russian Olympiad competition
Students of the Center for Applied Physics and Basic Sciences are looking forward to achieving honorable results in the Russian Olympiad competition organized by the Russian School of Mathematics “RSM” in the United States of America, in which 30,000 students around the world compete after passing the qualifying stage.
Basil Sultan, the scientific supervisor and head of the Physics Department at the center, said that the competition is of a high level of difficulty and consists of three sections, the first of which is “mental arithmetic,” followed by a section for “complex arithmetic and engineering problems,” and then a section for “research questions for students,” indicating that it is necessary for the participants to master the English language, as it is one of the languages approved in the Olympiad.
Sultan added that 18 male and female students from Lattakia, Damascus, Homs, Tartous and Sweida participated in the remote competition, stressing the importance of these activities in refining skills and learning innovative ways of creative thinking, which will positively affect academic achievement.
Tim Makhlouf, 17, who joined the center since its inception, motivated by his love and passion for mathematics, talked about the cumulative experience that he built through individual and group participation locally and globally, as he became more familiar with English scientific terms, in addition to developing thinking skills, avoiding error, speed of writing, and focusing on time as a factor. He was supported by Tim Al-Shamali, 16, who found in the center an opportunity to enrich knowledge and information and open new horizons for self-development.
Sidra Berry, 15 years old, from Tartous, and Zainab Ghazal, 16 years old, from Lattakia, pointed out the added value that the center achieved for them on the personal and scientific levels in terms of self-confidence, developing logical thinking skills and finding new solutions to mathematical problems, which positively affected their performance in school.
Six bronze medals and certificates of appreciation are the outcome of the center’s latest participation, which ranked fourth after Malaysia, Singapore and Pakistan in the global mathematics competition “3B Learning”, which was held in the Australian city of Sydney, in celebration of the International Day of Mathematics, with the participation of 3 million students from around the world.
The center aims to attract basic and secondary students who are distinguished in physics, mathematics, chemistry and artificial intelligence, to train them on the foundations of scientific research and innovation, and to refine their skills under the supervision of cadres comprising elite professors, university students, engineers and others, leading to the establishment of a generation of young researchers with the ability to represent Syria and enhance its presence on the world stage.
