Syria reaffirms “Brussels Conference on Supporting the Future of Syria” inconsistent with the UN principles regulating humanitarian action
Syria has reaffirmed its stance on the so-called “Brussels Conference on Supporting the Future of Syria and the Region”, due to be held on May 9th and 10th, pointing out that such conferences, in their current form, are inconsistent with the principles of the United Nations regulating humanitarian action, and they are taking place without the participation of the main concerned state, which is the Syrian Arab Republic, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates said in a statement on Monday.
The Ministry added that these conferences don’t reflect a real keenness on assisting the Syrian people and restoring its rights, given the fact that the countries organizing these conferences and participating in them are still occupying Syrian territories or still supporting the occupation of parts of Syria and the looting of the Syrian people’s resources in collusion with their tools in separatist militias.
“Real keenness on helping the Syrian people requires, first of all, changing the wrong approach, which has been adopted by the organizers and participants of this conference, ending the occupation of Syrian lands, stopping the looting of the Syrian people’s resources and lifting the unilateral coercive measures imposed on this people,” the ministry clarified.
The ministry went on to say that it is no longer a secret that the organizers of the conference are politicizing the humanitarian aid file and imposing political preconditions that have nothing to do with the requirements and objectives of humanitarian action.
“The organizers continue to impede the implementation of reconstruction and early recovery projects in Syria and they hinder the return of refugees and insist on not supporting them after their return,” the ministry explained.
“What confirms the extent of the politicization of the humanitarian aid issue is the failure of the organizers to invite the Russian Federation or other countries with a balanced stance to participate in the 6th Brussels Conference for purely political reasons that have nothing to do with the situation in Syria,” the ministry pointed out.
“Syria was a self-sufficient country before western-backed terrorism hit it. It enjoyed notable economic growth, had no external debts and didn’t need any kind of assistance. It used to be the first to host refugees from other countries of the region and abroad and it dealt them without discrimination or politicization, the ministry explained.
