A ban on the import of Russian gas cannot be imposed now, says German Finance Minister

Berlin, (ST) –  German Finance Minister Christian Lindner affirmed on Monday that, Germany cannot impose a ban on Russian gas imports now.

Lindner said in a television interview that, we must make sure that we maintain our economic strength. “If Germany abandons importing Russian gas, it will harm its economy even worse than what Russia would receive if such a decision was taken now,” he added.

In the same context, German Economy Minister Robert Habeck, in response to a question about the possibility of suspending gas supplies from Russia, confirmed that, “Germany will continue to pay for Russian gas according to the directives of the European Union and as stipulated in the contracts signed with the Russian side.”
