Syria: Achieving the universality of the Chemical Weapons Convention will not take place without obligating Israel to join it and put its weapons under control
Damascus (ST): Syria affirmed that achieving the universality of the Chemical Weapons Convention will not take place without obligating the Israeli occupation entity to join it and place its nuclear, chemical and biological weapons under international control, stressing the need for some Western countries to stop politicizing the work of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons and diverting it from the goals for which it was found.
An official source at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates said in a statement today, “Syria welcomes the twenty-fifth anniversary of the entry into force of the Chemical Weapons Convention, as it is the first multilateral agreement to eliminate a whole category of weapons of mass destruction, and stresses in this context that achieving the universality of the Chemical Weapons Convention represents an important step.” It is very important to ensure the establishment of an effective global system against chemical weapons, but this matter will not be achieved without obligating Israel to join this agreement and to place its nuclear, chemical and biological weapons under international control.”
The source added, “Syria joined the Chemical Weapons Convention in 2013 voluntarily and in good faith, in its belief in rejecting the use of chemical weapons by anyone, anywhere and under any circumstances, and it implemented its sovereign decision to finish the chemical file, and that was actually done within a record time and accomplished what it had not accomplished.
The source stressed that Syria rejects what was stated in the European statement and sees it as a continuation of the misleading positions that the Union has been taking for several years and its continuous attempts to involve this technical organization again with purely political and security issues and to bring false and baseless accusations to serve the political agendas of the European Union against Syria and the Russian Federation, and as a justification for their continuing to impose their immoral unilateral coercive policies and economic measures, not to mention the provision by some European Union countries of all forms of support to terrorists in Syria, including covering up the crimes of terrorists’ use of chemical weapons in Syria with the aim of accusing the Syrian government of using these weapons.
