Marking World Heritage Day, the Cultural Center in Baniyas city has recently held a celebration entitled “Spring Songs of the Syrian Coast,” to highlight the most important traditional songs that were presented during the spring celebrations of the Syrian coast.
Head of the Cultural Center in Baniyas, Khaled Haidar, indicated to SANA that the celebration was held within the framework of the Ministry of Culture’s interest in heritage as an identity that must be preserved and passed on to new generations.
Hassan Ismael, a researcher of heritage and a member of the Regional Committee for the Revival of Heritage, presented a number of traditional songs with the young YaraMu’alla, accompanied by playing the lute including those which people used to chant on the Syrian New Year’s Day, which runs from April 1st to the tenth.
He pointed to the connection between Syrian heritage songs and our civilization, such as the “Umm al-Zulf” song, which is considered an icon of heritage because of its connection to Ishtar, the goddess of love and beauty.
In turn, the researcher of oral folklore, Nabil Ajamiya, gave a lecture on the songs of spring that accompany the man from his birth to the moment of his departure.
He indicated that the song is a record documenting the condition of people in those old days, stressing that this cultural event is a message for future generations which aims to convey messages of love and joy and spread friendliness, generosity and kindness away from falsehood.
Young Yara Mualla, participating for the first time in singing, expressed the importance of this celebration in restoring the roots of our ancestors and our heritage and in preserving Syrian cultural heritage.
