Shulgin: The West considers the Organization for the Prohibition of Arms as a tool to implement its interests

Russia reiterated that the United States of America considers the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons a tool for implementing its geopolitical strategy.

Russia’s permanent representative to the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons Alexander Shulgin told reporters today: “Our Western colleagues, especially in the United States and its allies, see the OPCW as a tool for implementing their geopolitical strategy, and this is why we disagree with them.”

Shulgin noted that Russia views the organization as a forum for limiting chemical proliferation, appreciates its global nature. Russia is interested in working within the framework of the strictly-specified technical mandate it is issued in this respect, while the Americans and their allies have begun to replace international law with fictitious rules, and this is very noticeable in the Organization’s position.

With regard to Ukraine, Shulgin stated that the latter has the ability to manufacture chemical weapons, and said: “If they in Kyiv are thinking about re-establishing nuclear weapons, why wouldn’t they do, because they have kept their capabilities from previous years and have a strong chemical industry,” noting that Ukraine, in one way or another, will use provocations in the field of chemical weapons.

Shulgin did not rule out attempts to remove the Russian Federation from participating in the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons against the background of the anti-Moscow rhetoric, adding: “In theory, this scenario, that was used in Syria to strip it of its rights and privileges under the Chemical Agreement, can be repeated by the Western countries with regard to Russia.” .
