Lavrov: The West is violating the United Nations Charter and the principle of multilateralism

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stressed that the West is violating the United Nations Charter and the principle of multilateralism and is taking an approach to stabilize and strengthen the unipolar world.

At the start of his meeting with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres in Moscow today, Lavrov said: “The West has for years been violating the principle of pluralism, and today we assess your desire in this difficult stage to start seriously thinking about developing the United Nations and implementing the principle of pluralism,” adding that “true pluralism must be based on the Charter of the United Nations, which stipulates respect for the sovereignty, freedoms and interests of all states.”

Lavrov pointed out the importance of dialogue with representatives of the United Nations, noting that during the meeting several important issues would be discussed.

For his part, the Secretary-General of the United Nations pointed to the need to find ways for an effective dialogue and reach a ceasefire in Ukraine, indicating that the dialogue with Lavrov and Russian President Vladimir Putin will address various issues, including the increasingly severe economic crisis in the world.
