Brussels (ST): The European Union Commissioner for Foreign and Security Policy Josep Borrell announced that the Union does not have any unified plan to impose a collective embargo on Russian oil and that many EU countries have threatened to use their vetoes in the face of such a move.
TASS news agency quoted Borrell as saying in an interview published by the French newspaper Le Figaro today: “It will be very difficult to reach an agreement on banning Russian oil supplies or increasing tariffs on it, given that a number of EU countries have explicitly declared before that they will prevent any collective decision being reached in this regard.”
Borrell added that this matter is the responsibility of the higher authorities and it is up to the European Council to decide on it, and it has not yet issued any instructions to impose a tax or ban on imports of Russian oil or gas.
