Students from Tishreen University invent a smart stick for the blind

A group of students from the Department of Electricity “Applied Science College” majoring in Communication Technologies at Tishreen University in Lattakia succeeded in creating a smart stick to help the blind. The smart stick is an application project presented during an exhibition held earlier at the university’s central library.

The stick alerts the blind by vibrating in the fist and making a whistling sound that increases or decreases according to its proximity to a certain barrier. The stick is divided into three parts: a distance sensor programmed for a distance of 70 cm, and a microcontroller which is the brain that is programmable according to the inputs and outputs in addition to the final alert and alarm part.

The stick includes a 7-volt lithium battery rechargeable via a smartphone charger that continues to work for 4 or 5 days until it is charged again. The implementation of the project took about two months till the product was ready for use and could be obtained easily at an affordable price for consumers.

The stick could be later developed by controlling its length and using a specific communication system as an emergency button for the blind to communicate with a relative in case he/she is endangered.
