Syrian artists and heritage collectors immortalize the Great Syrian Revolution

The Great Syrian Revolution, which led the Syrian people to achieve independence and the evacuation of the French colonizer from their homeland, took effectively the attention of heritage collectors and artists of Sweida Governorate, who immortalized its memory with lofty works and collectibles that reflected that important stage of the Syrian history.

In the village of Douma in the northeastern countryside of Sweida , the artwork of “The Ladder of Glory” , which was built by the artist Ghazi Hamza’s brown hands, burdened with life’s troubles, stands over a part of his house after years of fatigue, using iron, cement, gravel, sand and paint. It consists of 14 steps representing the number of Syrian governorates with a height of 7 meters and a weight exceeding 5 tons.

This artwork includes the flag of the Syrian Arab Republic, the map of the country, and a group of suns that rise above the ladder and surround it in a symbolic meaning of the name Syria, the land of the sun, in reference to the brightness of freedom that illuminated the path to independence thanks to the heroism and sacrifices of ancestors.

The artist Hamza was not satisfied with this work, as it was preceded by drawing paintings at his home museum of patriotic figures of the Great Syrian Revolution, including its general leader Sultan Pasha al-Atrash, Sheikh Saleh al-Ali, the great Mujahid Ibrahim Hanano and others, which reflected his patriotic sense and the great effort that this artist made.

Influenced by his town “ Al-Mazra’h” , which witnessed a fierce battle against the colonizer, the sculptor Aghwad Farhoud presented a sculptural model of an old French cannon made entirely of basalt stone, which he placed at the entrance of his town, symbolizing a war machine destroyed by the ancestors in the battle of “ Al-Mazra’ah”.

The director, Tayseer Al-Abbas, also succeeded in documenting the period from the history of the battles of the Great Syrian Revolution to the Evacuation Day , by collecting no less than 300 photos, including those related to preparing for battles and evacuation celebrations, as well as some documents and tools used by the fighters in the battles.

According to Al-Abbas, his motive for his work is to preserve the local heritage as a national identity, revitalize the past and remind the current generations, based on the fact that preserving our heritage is a national responsibility of all society members and institutions.

In turn,  Jamal Muhanna from the village of Umm al-Zaytoun documented many pictures related to the events of the Great Syrian Revolution and collected some war pieces that were seized by the fighters or that were used at the time, in addition to an old document with the names of the martyrs of his village in the Great Syrian Revolution engraved with the seal and signature of the mayor of the village .

The artworks of Hamza, Farhoud, Abbas and Muhannaremains a model for many Syrian heritage collectors and artists throughout the homeland who presented works and collectibles related to the struggle against the occupier, reflecting its immortal memory and its importance in achieving independence, so that the new generation could inspire from them the meanings of heroism in defense of the land.
