Wide opposition for establishing US military bases in Czech

Political and people’s opposition for establishing US military bases on the Czech territory has grown, as many parties have already expressed their unwillingness to have US troops on their country’s land.

Former Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babiš has expressed his party’s opposition to the idea of a new military base for the US Army in the Czech Republic, describing the move as “absurd” since it harms the interests of the Czech people.

“This is a very sensitive issue and the best solution would be to hold a referendum before making a decision in this regard,” Babiš, who is the leader of ANO Party, said.

On his part, Tomio Okamura, leader of the Freedom and Direct Democracy Party, expressed his rejection of establishing US military bases in the Czech, calling for modernizing the armed forces and changing their strategy so as to protect the Czech territories and the population of the country instead of participating in foreign military operations.

The government should hold a referendum on this issue so that the decision on such an important issue will be made by the citizens of the country, Okamura clarified.

An opinion poll conducted by the Czech “Parliamentary Papers” website, shows that the majority of the Czech citizens oppose having NATO bases in their country, because this will pose a threat to the country’s security and stability.
