New Syrian achievement in global scientific forums

Syria is no longer the same as it was ten years ago because of the unjust war it went through. Its scientists, educated young people, and skilled workers have migrated to build a better future for themselves, but Syria is still alive in their hearts, and  communication and fruitful cooperation continued between those who remained in the country and those who left to look for an opportunity to work or learn.

Despite poor capabilities, Syrian researcher engineer Hassan Kenjrawy from Tishreen University, under the supervision of his professors, Dr. Carlo Makdisie, and Dr. Issam Houssamo, and with the help of Dr. Nabil Mohammed who resides in Australia, has managed to develop an innovation that was confirmed by scientific societies and specialized world journals.

PhD candidate Hassan Kenjrawy presented qualitative research on the use of new, sophisticated techniques to improve the quality of electrical feed delivered to the consumer, entitled “The use of a unified power quality conditioner connected to a photovoltaic system.”

Eng. Kenjrawy said, “The importance of research lies in finding solutions to the electrical power sources depending on sustainable renewable resources and removing the harmful high harmonics that affect the operation of electrical equipment. This matter is not specific to us as a region, but rather a general problem for all the world’s energy users. The harmful high harmonics that result from the use of various electrical equipment in the world, whether small or large, negatively affect the electrical supply network and cause large losses and damage to the equipment associated with this network.

Prof. Carlo Makdisie, the supervisor of this thesis, said, “In this research, various cases of disturbances and faults (more than 7 studied cases) that could occur were studied, and solutions were found for them depending on the proposed system. Since it was necessary to confirm the research ideas through publication in reputable international journals, we communicated with Dr. Nabil Mohammed, who works at the Australian University of Monash, Which is considered one of the top 100 universities in the world. We started, with the help of Dr. Muhammad to implement the steps of the submitted research paper to be published in a prestigious international journal. We presented the paper under the title, “New Modulation Technique In Smart Grid Interfaced Multilevel UPQC–PV Controlled Via Fuzzy Logic Controller”  to be published in the Swiss MDPI Series where we went through four rounds of serious arbitration.”

“The research was approved and published in the Swiss MDPI Series which is considered an effective contribution to raising the classification of our Syrian universities among international ones. I hope that cooperation will continue between our University, Monash University of Australia, and other prestigious universities with a view to raising the level of higher education and scientific research in our country,” Dr. Makdisie added.

About the Research published recently in cooperation between the two universities, Dr.. Nabil Mohammed, stated, “The current significant changes in the electric power systems are driving the conventional systems towards power-electronics- based power systems. These latter systems allow for greater integration of sustainable energy sources, where grid-connected inverters play an important and direct part in such distributed generation technologies. However, power-electronics-based power systems pose different challenges to the quality of the supplied power in terms of harmonics and unbalanced operations. To address such issues, our research article proposes an effective control technique to improve the performance of inverters working as active power filters, resulting in significant improvements in the power quality.”

“Finally, I would like to say I am very honored to collaborate with Prof. Carlo and his student(s) in order to contribute to the scientific research outcomes of my home University, Tishreen University, where I did my bachelor’s degree from.” Dr. Nabil concluded.

It is worth noting that Eng. Hassan Kenjrawy holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in electrical power engineering from Tishreen University, Lattakia. He is currently working as a lecturer in the Applied College and the College of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering at Tishreen University.

Dr. Nabil Mohammed holds a BA with honors  in electrical power engineering  from Tishreen University, Lattakia,  in 2013, and the M. Eng. Degree (High Distinction) in electrical engineering from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia,” Johor Bahru, Malaysia,” in 2017, and the Ph.D. degree in power electronics from Macquarie University, Sydney, NSW, Australia, in 2022.

Through his professional journey, Dr. Mohammed participated in different international events in Australia, Italy, Romania, and Denmark. He is certified peer reviewer for research from both Elsevier Researcher Academy, Netherland, and from Publons Academy, USA as he has reviewed more than 150 scientific articles to several International Journals and Conferences.

It is important to mention that Dr. Carlo is considered one of the most active researchers in the field of electrical engineering. In addition to supervising many applied projects, master’s, and doctoral theses, he also arbitrated many external doctoral theses and international research papers, and contributed to the manufacture of many equipment during the Corona epidemic period.
