Human rights should not be a victim of narrow political considerations

New York (ST): Iran’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations Majid Takht Ravanchi affirmed that the decision to suspend Russia’s membership in the Human Rights Council is politically motivated and affects the neutrality of the United Nations, stressing that human rights should not fall victim to narrow political considerations.

During his speech at the United Nations General Assembly, Ravanchi said, “The work of the Human Rights Council must be pursued in a non-political manner, and membership in this Council should not be based on politicization.”

Ravanchi stressed that abusing the United Nations human rights mechanism to achieve political goals contradicts the principle of the necessity of universal inclusiveness and non-selectivity in discussing human rights issues.

Meanwhile, Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez Parilla stressed that suspending Russia’s membership in the Human Rights Council threatens independent states and does not contribute to a settlement in Ukraine.

The media quoted Rodriguez as saying: “The suspension of Russia’s membership does not lead to the promotion of a peaceful and lasting negotiated settlement in Ukraine,” adding: “Today Russia and tomorrow could be one of any of the southern countries that do not bow to the interests of Western hegemony and maintain its independence
