Polyansky warns of the consequences of suspending Russia’s membership in the Human Rights Council

On April 7th, Russia warned that the suspension of the Russian Federation’s work in the UN Human Rights Council may have serious consequences for the United Nations system as a whole.

Russia stressed that its removal from the Council will deprive developing countries of protection.

“This approach by the United States and its allies may have serious consequences for the United Nations system,” Russia’s First Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Dmitry Polyansky, said on his Telegram channel.

Polyansky pointed out that the upcoming vote was not related to the Russian-Ukrainian conflict or the alleged Russian violations of human rights.

He said: “Given the increase in counterfeiting and provocations, this is a premeditated tactical step, and it is a dangerous precedent when a group of Western countries are trying to impose their rules and preferences on others.”

Polyansky added: “This step comes within the international system based on the rules promoted by the West, which is represented by unprincipled colonial blackmail under the guise of a noble cause.”

Polyansky said that his country plays an important balanced role, and its removal from the Human Rights Council will deprive developing countries of strong and noisy protection.

The United Nations General Assembly is voting on a draft resolution to suspend Russia’s activities in the United Nations Human Rights Council. The draft was prepared by a number of Western countries, including the United States, Ukraine and Latvia.
