Damascus (ST): The Minister of Agriculture and Agrarian Reform, Eng. Muhammad Hassan Qatna, discussed with a delegation from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), represented by the General Authority for Fisheries in the Mediterranean, the reality of fisheries and fish farming in Syria.
During the meeting, they discussed the priorities through which this sector can be developed and the possibility of expanding in the field of small family fish farms, in addition to developing and sustaining fish farming in fresh and marine waters for its important role in strengthening food security in Syria.
Minister Qatna confirmed, in a statement to reporters, that an integrated strategy has been adopted to develop the reality of fisheries, targeting the production of 60,000 tons and end product marketing.
In turn, Dr. Hussam Hamza of the General Authority for Fisheries in the Mediterranean indicated that there are important capabilities to develop the fisheries sector in Syria, pointing out that the role of the authority is to support this important strategic sector that contributes to food security and improve the living conditions of farmers and citizens.
