Russia and Iran reiterated the necessity for a political solution to the crisis in Syria and their common desire to coordinate measures in order to improve the economic situation in the country.
“We discussed the situation in Syria and expressed a common desire to coordinate actions and measures to improve the economic and humanitarian conditions in Syria,” Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said during a press conference with his Iranian counterpart Hossein Amir Abdullahian in Moscow today, Tuesday, the 15th of March 2022.
Lavrov stressed that Russia will work to increase its cooperation with Iran even under conditions of illegal sanctions, and will support the expediting of an agreement on the Iranian nuclear file, and is waiting for the United States to return to the agreement and lift sanctions on Tehran.
On the situation in Ukraine, Lavrov thanked the Iranian side for its balanced stance and Russia’s support regarding its security, which is being destabilized by the NATO and the European countries.
In turn, the Iranian Foreign Minister said that he discussed with Lavrov a peaceful settlement of the crisis in Syria on the basis of the Astana formula, stressing the need to provide support to the Syrian people in order to overcome the difficulties of the sanctions imposed on them and achieve progress in the reconstruction process.
Regarding relations between Russia and Iran, Abdullahian affirmed that the prospects for developing these relations are positive and there are many economic projects between the two sides, explaining that the sanctions imposed on Iran and Russia do not impede the course of relations between the two countries.
“We hope that we will be able to announce soon a good agreement on our nuclear file, noting that the delay that occurred in the Vienna talks may create an appropriate ground for preserving Iran’s interests,” Abdullahian said.
At the outset of his meeting with Abdullahian in Moscow today, Lavrov announced that his country and Iran are working on preparing new documents that would enhance their partnership, noting that the volume of trade exchange between Russia and Iran is growing steadily despite the influence of external factors.
For his part, Abdullahian affirmed that regardless of what happens in the international arena, developing relations with Russia is of importance to his country.
