CAPITALS,(ST)_ Cuba and Russian Islamic bodies in Chechnya, Dagestan and North Ossetia warned against the risk of intervention in Syria and sending young men to fight against its people.
Meantime, the British Daily Telegraph stressed that hundreds of insurgents in Syria began dropping their weapons, while the U.S. House of Representatives admitted that efforts by Washington to arm terrorist groups in Syria serves the US interest.
Cuba has warned of the risks of foreign intervention in Syria, noting that this would have serious implications on international peace and security, particularly in the Middle East.
Cuba representative at the UN Rodolfo Reyes denounced during a meeting for UN Security Council yesterday on the situation in the Middle East , using the term protection of civilians and exploiting them as a pretext for foreign intervention, either directly or through support of armed groups and mercenaries fighting in Syria, expressing concern over continued calls by some countries to “regime change” in Syria , a matter which leads to continued violence.
Reyes refused NATO attempts to obtain the approval of the UN Security Council to intervene in Syria, saying , “the mission of NATO must be to protect people and not for external interventions for the interests of its founding states ” . He strongly condemned the complicity of the media in dealing with the events in Syria.
The Cuban delegate stressed that the UN duty is to promote peace, not violence and prevent destabilization rather than contribute to the funding, arming and training groups to destabilize Syria.
Reyes stressed the need for the UN Security Council to play a role in maintaining international peace and security and to take concrete and tangible steps against Israel and stop its violations against the Palestinian people.
He pointed that Israel deliberately violates UN resolutions, a matter which constitutes a threat to international peace and regional security and violates human rights, stressing that the illegal Israeli occupation of the Palestinian territories and other Arab territories continues to be a major obstacle to the achievement of a just, lasting and comprehensive peace in the Middle East.
Reyes called for the release of Palestinian prisoners and the lifting of the blockade imposed on the Gaza Strip in order to launch a political process to bring peace to the region.
