The European Union will not impose sanctions on Russian oil and gas imports

Paris (ST): Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban confirmed today that the European Union will not impose sanctions on Russian oil and gas imports, contrary to the recent US decision on this issue.

Orban said on his Facebook page: “The most important issue for us has been settled in a favorable way. There will be no sanctions that can be applied to Russian gas or oil imports,” noting that Hungary’s energy supplies will be safe in the coming period.

The European Union’s decision contrasts with the United States, whose President Joe Biden imposed an immediate embargo on Russian oil and energy imports last Tuesday.

According to Orban, who spoke on the sidelines of a summit of European Union leaders in Paris, the Union will not follow America’s lead, as Europe is more dependent on the energy provided by Russia, as 45 percent of the gas imported by Italy comes from Russia, while Germany supplies 55 percent of gas purchases.
