Women in Syrian drama

The Syrian drama, through its various works, has highlighted the role of Syrian  women as a basic and effective part in the society at various levels. It  presented a realistic condition of the Syrian women who  fought for their  beliefs throughout history and  did not stop their creativity and uniqueness.

Syrian actresses have managed to prove their remarkable presence in drama  since its inception by playing the starring role  of a group of the most important works that depicted the positive impact of women in society .

The first Syrian historical drama  was in 1961  about the poet (Rabi’a Al-Adawiyya).The TV series “The Good Seeds”  in 1969  was  the first work by the  Syrian director  AnisaAssaf in the archives of the Syrian Arab TV, in addition to other historical works,

The drama makers were keen on presenting  the key role of women in motivating life in an effective way, stressing their  role in society is no less than that of men and not just a shadow of them.

Later , women were given a more realistic space, so the image of women was transformed from cooking and creating problems to active and strong women in series that were based on the real history of Damascus so they had an active role in society .

The series “Hara’er”  included unique realistic personalities from Syrian history during  the period  1915 – 1920  such as the journalist  Mary Ajami who founded the first women’s magazine in Syria, and the activist and writer Nazik Al-Abed , who headed an association to help the victims of the Syrian revolution and  called for giving women the right to vote in addition to the  character of the  poet  Mariana Marrash who   was one of the pioneering women in  press.

The social drama dealt with  various  issues  of women whether persecuted or idealized in social or emotional relationships.The Syrian mother was presented as a role model in education and the ideal treatment of children.

Syrian actresses excelled in embodying what  women have been  subjected to as a result of the terrorist war on Syria  and defending them according to an influential dramatic line. The series “Shawq” focused on the kidnapping of women from different segments by terrorists and then  subjecting them  to killing, torture and rape.
