Chisinau (ST): The Prime Minister of Moldova, Natalia Gavrilica, announced that her country does not plan to join NATO.
“The principle of neutrality is enshrined in our constitution,” Gavrilica said in an interview with Euronews. “We will seek to join the European Union, but we will not seek to join NATO.”
According to Moldova’s constitution, the republic has a neutral status, but since 1994 the country has been cooperating with NATO in the framework of an Individual Partnership Plan, while public opinion polls show that more than 60 percent of the population opposes its accession to the Alliance.
Moldova’s president, Maya Sandu, signed her country’s application to join the European Union on the 3rd of this month.
