Syria rejects the draft resolution submitted to the United Nations General Assembly on Ukraine

New York, (ST) – Syria affirmed its rejection of the draft resolution submitted to the United Nations General Assembly on Ukraine.

Syria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Bassam Sabbagh said in a speech during an extraordinary session on Ukraine that, the draft resolution before us today expresses a biased approach based on political propaganda and represents a tool of pressure and political blackmail.

He added that, this draft resolution includes hostile language against the Russian Federation aimed at undermining Russian Federation’s position and its legitimate right to protect its land and people.

Ambassador Sabbagh said that, the draft resolution represents outright political hypocrisy, because if the United States of America and its Western allies were really serious about defusing tension in that region, they would have fulfilled the promises they made to the Russian Federation three decades ago not to expand NATO to the east and not to turn Ukraine into a source of direct and real threat to the Russian Federation.

Sabbagh also added that, ” if the United States of America and its Western allies were really serious about defusing tension in that region, they would have pressured the Kyiv authorities to abide by the Minsk agreements and stop their grave violations against civilians in Donbass.”

Ambassador Sabbagh went on to say that, those who are enthusiastic today about defending the Charter of the United Nations had to show the same enthusiasm against Israel’s continued occupation of Arab lands and against the Turkish forces’ violation of the sovereignty of Syrian lands, and the violation of Syrian sovereignty by the United States of America forces.

Ambassador Sabbagh said that, the authors of the draft resolution were keen to include hostile language directed against the Russian Federation aimed at undermining its position and its legitimate right to protect its land and people from the real threat to its national security.

Ambassador Sabbagh pointed out that, the presentation of the draft resolution today is accompanied by massive misleading media and major campaigns to distort facts and spread false information. “It was not designed to search for a real solution to the crisis, but rather to demonize the Russian Federation and distort its image, indicating that it is a text full of gaps and far from objectivity and ignores the real reasons behind igniting Fuse this crisis”, he added.

Ambassador Sabbagh reiterated the Syrian Arab Republic’s rejection of the West’s policy of hegemony and interference in the internal affairs of member states, igniting and prolonging crises, spreading chaos, consolidating selectivity and double standards and imposing coercive unilateral measures, which necessitates rejecting and voting against this draft resolution.
