Beijing – China affirmed on Thursday that the Russian special military operation launched to protect the residents of the Donbass region “is not an invasion of Ukraine.” She added that this term (invasion) is biased.
“Russia is a major state and acts independently based on its strategic decisions and does not need approval before taking any steps,” Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said in a press statement on Thursday.
The spokeswoman stressed that China is closely following the developments in the situation in Ukraine. She called on all parties to exercise restraint and prevent the situation from spiraling out of control.
Hua Chunying said that the Ukrainian crisis has a very complex historical background and various factors behind it.
She pointed out that China and Russia are developing their comprehensive strategic partnership on the basis of equality.
Russian President Vladimir Putin announced the start of a special operation to protect the residents of the Donbass region, based on a request for assistance from the Donetsk and Lugansk republics.
