On February 6th, Chairman of the Writers’ Union Dr. Muhammad al-Hourani met with the Democratic People Republic of Korea‘s ambassador to Syria Moon Jong Nam at the headquarters of the Arab Writers Union in Damascus.
The two sides discussed improving cultural relations between Syria and the DPRK and ways to activate the mutual translation of printed books in the Arabic and Korean languages and the establishment of periodic cultural activities with the participation of the two countries.
The two sides touched on the role of intellectuals in presenting proposals that target terrorism and external aggression.
Dr. Muhammad al-Hourani said that the culture in both countries is the outcome of an ancient civilization spanning thousands of years.
Dr. Muhammad al-Hourani said that the steadfastness of the Syrian and Korean peoples and their defense of their land and their adherence to their identity requires that these two countries strengthen their cultural cooperation to raise it to the level of solid political relations.
Dr. Muhammad al-Hourani said noted the positions of the DPRK’s support for Syria in its war against terrorism and its agents. .
For his part, Ambassador Jong Nam reiterated his country’s supportive stance for Syria in its struggle against terrorism, its adherence to its rights and its resistance to foreign occupation of its land.
He said that culture is an essential part in the battle for existence.
Members of the Executive Office of the Union participating in the meeting spoke about the importance of cultural exchange for developing relations between the two countries and openness to the products of Korean writers.
The meeting was attended by the DPRK Embassy in Damascus’s Counsellors Kim Hye-young and Nshwe Chang-ho, and the third secretary of the embassy, Ri Chul-yong
