Syrian-Iraqi Talks in The Field of Water and The Challenges of The Water Reality in The Two Countries
The Minister of Local Administration and Environment, Engineer Hussein Makhlouf, discussed today, Thursday, the 3rd of February 2022 with the Iraqi Minister of Water Resources, Engineer Mahdi Rashid Al-Hamdani, and the accompanying delegation, the challenges related to the water situation of the two countries and the prospects for cooperation in facing climate changes and groundwater management.
During the meeting, which was held at the Ministry’s premises today, the two sides stressed the necessity of joint action, exchanging information, data, experiences, technical and scientific communication, and everything related to water developments for the benefit of the two countries.
Minister Makhlouf stressed the importance of achieving integration and partnership between the two sides to overcome challenges and the effects of climate change on the region, pointing to Syria’s keenness to strengthen bilateral relations in all fields and to learn about the experiences of both sides in terms of investing water resources.
For his part, Minister Al-Hamdani affirmed Iraq’s readiness to cooperate and find a common solution to the obstacles and conditions facing the two countries and unify the Iraqi-Syrian visions regarding their share in the Tigris and Euphrates rivers, noting that the meeting at the Ministry of Local Administration and Environment comes due to its close association with the Ministry of Water Resources in terms of preventing pollutants and treating water sewage.
The meeting was attended by the Minister of Water Resources, Dr. Tammam Raad, the Director of the Arab Center for Studies of Arid Zones and Dry Lands “ACSAD”, Dr. Nasr Al-Din Al-Obeid, and the Chargé d’Affaires at the Iraqi Embassy in Damascus Yassin Sharif Al-Hujaimi.
