Ankara (ST): Turkish parliamentarian Sezgin Tanrikulu, deputy head of the Parliamentary Commission of Inquiry on Human Rights, revealed in the annual report of the Republican People’s Party (CHP) that the Turkish regime headed by Recep Tayyip Erdogan has significantly violated human rights in Turkey during 2021.
Tanrikulu explained that last year, the right to life of 2,964 citizens was violated, while 3,145 citizens were subjected to torture and ill-treatment. The report was based on local human rights organizations such as the Human Rights Association “IHD”, in addition to Amnesty International and the Union of Journalists in Turkey.
According to the report, the Turkish regime’s restrictive approach to the right to assemble and demonstrate continued throughout the past year, as it was revealed that law enforcement officers interfered in at least 334 peaceful meetings and demonstrations, resulting in the arrest of at least 3,500 citizens including children.
The report also stated that county governors banned peaceful protests by women’s rights activists, health care workers, lawyers, and political opposition parties at least 57 times in 26 provinces, and 26 journalists and program presenters were subjected to violence during 2021 because of their work, and 250 journalists were prosecuted in 130 cases.
