Recent events in Hasakah an attempt by Washington to reactivate ISIS and justify its stay in Syria: Sabbagh

Syria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations Bassam Sabbagh has stressed that recent events in the Syrian province of Hasakah, including the major ISIS terrorist attack and the massacres committed by the SDF militia and the destruction of infrastructure by the US occupation’s crimes come within the framework of Washington’s attempt to reactive ISIS in order to justify the stay of its troops in Syria in the light of the growing calls for the US forces’ withdrawal from the Syrian territories.

Sabbagh made the remarks on Wednesday during a Security Council session dedicated for discussing the political situation in Syria.

The Security Council should urgently consider the repercussions of the dangerous Hasakah events caused by the crimes of ISIS, the SDF separatist militia and the US occupation and by the insistence of some countries on not bringing back their terrorist nationals and their families, who have been held within camps and detention centers in the northeast of Syria, and putting them to trial, Sabbagh said.

He clarified that what has happened in Hasakah should push the Security Council to work  as to end to the illegal presence of the US occupation forces in the  northeastern part of Syria and in Al-Tanf area, to halt the US support for the separatist SDF militia and terrorist groups such as the so-called “Maghaweer Al-Thawra” group in Al-Tanf and Al-Rukban camp, which have been looting Syria’ resources.

He pointed out that the recent ISIS attack as well as the SDF crimes and the systematic destruction of infrastructure by the US warplanes that killed many Syrians and forced thousands of Syrian families to leave their houses to safer places are all part of the US attempt to reactivate ISIS and justify the illegal US presence in this area.

Sabbagh reaffirmed Syria’s stance that any discussion of this situation will be nothing but a waste of time as long as some western countries keep covering up the basic challenges facing Syria and deviating attention away from the aggressive practices that exacerbate the situation in the country and have catastrophic impacts on the lives of every Syrian citizen.

He reiterated that maintaining international peace and security requires urgent action by the Security Council to confront any violations against the UN Charter and resolutions, stressing that the Security Council should be objective and impartial when dealing with such serious issues and not to allow any party to use it as a platform for targeting other countries.

Sabbagh said that the Security Council holds several sessions on different issues related to Syria, but not a single session has been dedicated for discussing the repeated Israeli attacks on Syria territories and the aggressive practices of the Turkish and American occupation in the country.

He reiterated that Syria rejects the international community’s continuous ignoring of the serious violations against its sovereignty, independence, unity and territorial integrity and the grave challenges that face the improvement of the humanitarian situation of the Syrian people due to the unilateral coercive economic measures imposed on the country.

Sabbagh called on the Security Council to enforce its resolutions and those of the United Nations related to the occupied Syrian Golan in order to end the Israeli occupation and halt its plans to establish thousands of settlement units in the Golan with the aim of increasing the number of settlers in this Syrian area.

He also called on the Security Council to enforce its resolutions on fighting terrorism, to support the Syrian State and its allies’ counterterrorism efforts, to hold the countries sponsoring terrorist organizations accountable for shedding the blood of innocent Syrians and to stop the policy of economic terrorism and collective punishment represented in the illegal, immoral and inhuman coercive measures imposed by the United States and the European Union on the Syrian people.

The Syrian diplomat reaffirmed Syria’s commitment to reaching a political solution based on an intra-Syrian dialogue that achieves the aspirations of the Syrian people and guarantees full commitment to Syria’s sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity.
