The Slovak National Party described the government’s approval on Wednesday to sign the military agreement with the United States as “a betrayal and a black day for the sovereignty of Slovakia,” calling on the opposition parties to unite and work to thwart the agreement.
The Slovak government agreed that this agreement would be signed with the American side, but its implementation will require the approval of the Slovak Parliament, and then the approval of President Zuzana Caputova.
The 10-year agreement grants the US forces the right to use two military airports in Slovakia for training, maneuvers, housing, and the deployment of forces there. It also allows the transfer, deployment and storage of defense devices and technologies in the agreed upon places, where Slovakia renounces, according to this agreement, its right to penal prosecution of members of the American forces in the event they commit criminal acts on Slovak territory.
