Caricature Exhibition held in Damascus

Within the activities of the “Syrian Fine Art Days” in its fourth season, the Minister of Culture, Dr. Lubana Mshaweh, inaugurated yesterday a caricature exhibition at the Cultural Center in Kafr Sousa in Damascus.

About forty-four paintings for seven artists were displayed in the exhibition depicting cultural, artistic, social and educational issues.

Dr. Lubana Mshaweh said in a statement that, caricature is an expressive and impressionistic graphic art that highlights what the painter wants to convey, in an innovative manner.

“Caricature art aims to highlight defects with a mild or exaggerated flavor, but endearing to the soul, and adding a kind of humor without offending”, Dr. Mshaweh added.

The Minister indicated that referring to defects without offending people is what distinguishes the art of caricature.

“Our Arab and human societies in general are full of defects, and this creative form of Caricature art sheds light on them to confront and reform these defects”, she added.

Imad Kashoot, Director of Fine Arts, told “Syria times” that an exhibition of caricature artists is being held within the days of plastic art for the first time.

He pointied out that the Ministry of Culture encourages this art through exhibitions, competitions..

Artist Wissam Asaad participated with five paintings that depicted social family life, in addition to the impact of technology on people’s lives.

He considered that holding such an event is very important because the spread of this art through the social media is still not effective.

The plastic artist and caricaturist, Saed Salloum, indicated that the entry of caricature into exhibitions during the “Syrian Fine Art Days” met with more public presence than plastic art. The reason of this matter is that art relies on declaring and referring to the sources of pain and expressing the bitterness of reality directly. “This is in contrast to Plastic Art that depends on allusion more, emphasizing that this art accompanied the terrorist war with its consequences and continued showing the pains of society while also communicating  effectively with the public” Salloum concluded.
