UN official: The human rights situation in occupied Palestine has become catastrophic

Occupied Jerusalem (ST): The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Michelle Bachelet, warned that the human rights situation in the occupied Palestinian territories has reached “catastrophic” levels due to the continuous violations of the Israeli occupation and its settlers against the Palestinians.

According to Wafa Agency, Bachelet’s warning came during a briefing she gave before the United Nations Committee on the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People, which is currently being held in the Swiss city of Geneva, on the human rights situation in the occupied Palestinian territories.

Bachelet said “The human rights situation in the occupied Palestinian territories can be described as catastrophic, and it is clear that it will have devastating effects on the prospects for reaching a settlement on the Palestinian issue and sustainable development,”, stressing that ending the occupation is the only way to achieve peace between the Palestinians and the occupying entity.

Bachelet expressed her fears of the increasing cases of attacks on Palestinians by the occupation forces and settlers, which led to the death of 16 children in the West Bank and occupied Jerusalem this year, calling on the international community to assume its legal responsibilities to hold the occupation leaders accountable for their violations and crimes.
