Palestinians and the world commemorate the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People

Tomorrow, the Palestinians and the world will commemorate the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People, which was approved by the United Nations General Assembly in 1977 in affirmation of the Palestinians’ right to self-determination and the establishment of their independent state with Jerusalem as its capital.

This day is an opportunity to recall the tragedy of the Palestinian people and the injustice they were subjected to as a result of Resolution 181 issued by the General Assembly on November 29, 1947, known as the Partition Resolution, which resulted in the establishment of the usurping Israeli entity on the land of Palestine after the displacement of more than 700,000 Palestinians worldwide. The Palestinian people are still suffering from “Al-Nakba”  catastrophe amid the international community silence towards the occupiers’ crimes.

The celebration is held annually at the headquarters of the United Nations and at the offices of the international organization in Geneva and Vienna. This event includes cultural events and the holding of special meetings in which high-level officials of the United Nations, intergovernmental organizations and representatives of civil society make statements on the cause of Palestine.

The anniversary this year coincides with  the escalation of the Israeli occupation settlement operations to annex more Palestinian lands, as it announced the establishment of thousands of new settlements in flagrant violation of the resolutions of international legitimacy, which remained dead letters, foremost of which is Resolution 2334 of 2016, which affirms the illegality of settlement and calls for its cessation. The occupation’s attacks escalated against the Palestinians in the West Bank and the besieged Gaza Strip, which requires the international community to act immediately to stop the crimes of the occupation.

In a statement to SANA reporter, Mariam Abu Daqqa, a member of the Political Bureau of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, noted that the International Day of Solidarity comes in light of the settlement incursion, murder, attempts to Judaize Jerusalem, demolishing homes, crimes against prisoners, the continuation of the siege of the Gaza Strip, and the escalation of racist and criminal practices against the Palestinian people. She stressed that true solidarity with the Palestinians is through putting pressure on the occupation, unveiling its crimes, punishing and besieging it in international forums, and strengthening the popular boycott around the world of the Israeli occupation entity.

Member of the Central Committee of the Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine, Mahmoud Khalaf, noted that the United Nations did not implement the second part of its resolution 181 related to the establishment of the Palestinian state. Therefore, the international community, especially the UN Security Council, is required to support the right of the Palestinian people to establish their independent state with Jerusalem as its capital, and the return of refugees to their homes in accordance with the UN General Assembly’s resolution No. 194. He stressed that the rights of the Palestinian people are inalienable, underlined the urgency of bearing the international community responsible for achieving them and obliging the occupation to implement them, not to stand by and watch the violations and crimes committed by the occupation.

Member of the Political Bureau of the Palestinian People’s Party, Talaat Al-Safadi, called on parliaments and unions in the world to support the struggle of the Palestinian people to restore their legitimate rights and impose deterrent penalties on the occupation to stop its ongoing crimes of killing, settlement, Judaization and colonial annexations. He called for the activation and implementation of international resolutions on the Palestinian cause, foremost of which is the right to self-determination, the establishment of Palestinian state with Jerusalem as its capital, and legal prosecution of  the occupation in international forums.

Secretary-General of the Palestinian National Initiative, Mustafa Barghouthi, indicated that the World Solidarity Day is not only an occasion to recognize the rights of the Palestinian people, but an opportunity for real solidarity with them in their struggle, calling on the free people of the world to boycott the Israeli occupation in international forums and not be limited to statements of condemnation and denunciation of its crimes and massacres against the Palestinians.

The President of the International Commission to Support the Rights of the Palestinian People, Salah Abdel-Ati, stressed that this day is a renewed occasion to recall the injustice, abuse and persecution which the Palestinians were subjected to as a result of the failure of the international community, particularly the United Nations, to assume its responsibilities towards the Palestinian cause and to abide by its decisions towards the Palestinian people.
