The agency quoted the Indian Ambassador in Damascus Mahender Singh Kanyal as saying that the Indian constitution is the highest legislation after the independence of India from the British occupation, since it considers India as an independent, sovereign state in the world, and defines the basic political principles, rights, and duties.
It added that the ambassador referred to the Syrian-Indian relations, saying that India and Syria have historical and brotherly ties in political, economic, cultural, and academic fields.
For his part, Chairman of the Syrian UN Association, George Jabbour underlined the importance of India’s participation in its celebration of Constitution Day to confirm the distinguished relations between the two countries.
On November 26, 1949, the Constituent Assembly adopted the Constitution of India, and it came into effect on January 26, 1950. While January 26 has been celebrated as Republic Day, since 2015, November 26 has been observed as the Constitution Day of India, or Samvidhan Divas.
