Russia and Iran: Resolving the crisis in Syria in a way that ensures the preservation of its sovereignty

On November 21st, Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian discussed with the Russian President’s special envoy to Syria, Alexander Lavrentiev, and Russian Assistant Foreign Minister Sergei Vershinin the developments in Syria.

The senior advisor to the Iranian Foreign Minister for Special Political Affairs Ali Asghar Khaji also discussed with the Russian delegation the importance of Iran and Russia’s cooperation in combating terrorism in Syria .The preservation of Syria ‘s  sovereignty and territorial integrity was emphasized.

Khaji stressed the need to continue political efforts in the format of the Astana meetings to resolve the crisis in Syria, and his country’s readiness to host these meetings.

 

In turn, the Russian delegation stressed the importance of a political solution to the crisis, declaring readiness to activate joint meetings within the framework of the Astana formula and bilateral meetings.
