An agreement between Sudanese parties to end political crisis in the country

Sudanese media announced today that an agreement has been reached between the head of the Sovereign Council, Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, and the dismissed prime minister Abdullah Hamdok, in an attempt to end the political crisis in the country.

“A political agreement has been reached between Lieutenant-General Al-Burhan, Hamdok, political forces and civil society organizations on the return of Hamdok to his position and the release of political detainees,” Fadlallah Burma, a leader of the Nation Party, told AFP.

A group of Sudanese mediators, including academics, journalists and politicians, who have been involved in mediation talks to reach an agreement since the outbreak of the crisis, issued a statement specifying the main points of the agreement, including restoring Hamdok to his position as prime minister, releasing all detainees, and resuming the constitutional, legal and political consensus governing the transitional period.

The mediators’ statement added that the agreement was reached after a consensus between political factions, party groups and military figures, noting that “the agreement will be officially announced later today, after signing its terms and the accompanying political statement.”

It is noteworthy that Sudan has been witnessing a political crisis since the 25th  of last month after the dismissal of Hamdok’s government, the declaration of a state of emergency in the country, and the formation of a new Sovereign Council from which many members representing political and party forces were excluded.
