The UN calls on the occupation entity to pay compensation to Lebanon

New York (ST): The United Nations has demanded that the Israeli occupation entity  pay Lebanon $856.4 million in compensation for the environmental damages caused to its beaches due to the leakage of an oil slick during the July 2006 aggression and its bombing of the fuel tanks of the Lebanese Jiyeh power station.

Yesterday, the United Nations General Assembly voted in favor of the resolution by 161 votes to eight against, including “Israel” and the United States, while seven countries abstained.

According to the decision, the Assembly estimated that the environmental damage caused to Lebanon from the oil spill amounted to $856.4 million, and Israel is obligated to pay it.

The Assembly affirmed that it will ask the Israeli occupation to bear the responsibility of immediate payment and adequate compensation to Lebanon for the damages, and will ask it to compensate other countries directly affected by the oil spill, such as Syria, whose beaches were partially polluted.

The Israeli occupation forces bombed the Jiyeh thermal station during the July 2006 aggression, which led to the leakage of 15,000 cubic meters of fuel into the sea and polluted approximately 150 km of the sandy and rocky coastal beaches of Lebanon all the way to the Syrian shores.
