Damascus, (ST) – The Ministers of Water Resources in Syria and Iraq discussed in a virtual meeting on Wednesday the challenges related to the issue of water in both countries.
The two sides discussed the negative impacts of climate change and the intransigence of the Turkish side regarding reducing water supplies to Syria and Iraq from the Euphrates and Tigris rivers.
The Minister of Water Resources, Dr. Tammam Raad, stressed in his speech the necessity of joint action, exchanging information, data, technical and scientific communication, and everything related to the water issue to serve the interests of both countries.
Iraqi Minister of Water Resources Mahdi Rashid Al-Hamdani expressed his country’s readiness to cooperate with the Syrian side to find a common solution to eliminate the obstacles facing the two countries in this regard.
Al-Hamdani also expressed his country’s readiness to cooperate with Syrian experts to establish a research center in Baghdad and to hold training courses for Syrian technicians in the field of groundwater.
The Head of the National Center for Water Resources Management in Iraq gave a presentation on evaluating the water quotas for Syria, Iraq and Turkey and the applicable bases for determining these quotas.
The Iraqi Minister Al-Hamdani visited Syria last July to discuss cooperation between the two countries in the fields of water and water resources and to unify the tow countries positions at international forums with the aim of defending and preserving their water rights in the Euphrates and Tigris rivers.
Last May, a virtual meeting was held between the two sides and earlier in March 2021, minister Raad visited Baghdad leading a technical delegation to participate in the first Baghdad International Water Conference.
