Sudan’s Sovereign Council Chief declares state of emergency, dissolves Cabinet

The Sudanese Sovereign Council Chief, General Abdelfattah Al-Burhan, announced on Monday a state of emergency across the country and the dissolution of the transitional sovereign council and the Cabinet.

In a statement reported by the Sudanese TV, Al-Burhan said that the armed forces are committed to protecting the interests of the Sudanese people and hand over the state’s leadership to an elected civilian government.

He added that he has taken several steps including the dissolution of the Sovereign Council and the Cabinet and the suspension of work in some articles of the Constitution.

He pointed out that an independent government of national skills will be formed and it will continue with its duties until elections are held in 2023.

Earlier in the day, the Sudanese Ministry of Culture and Information announced that military forces arrested Prime Minister Abdullah Hamdouk and several members of the Sudanese Cabinet as well as many civilian members of the Sovereign Council.

On his part, Hamdouk, in a message from his house arrest place, asked the Sudanese people to adhere to peace and take to the streets to defend their revolution.

Later, the culture and information ministry announced that the army forces had taken Hamdouk this dawn to an unknown place after he refused to support the coup.
