A new book documents the history of the Syrian Parliament

The People’s Assembly PA in Syria is the legislative authority in the Syrian Arab Republic and its history is full of events that Syria has undergone since the launching of the first parliament in Syria then known as the (Syrian Conference) .

The first parliament began its sessions on the 3rd of June 1919 at the headquarters of the Arab Club in Damascus in the presence of 86 members representing the country before the American King Crane Committee to present the people’s wishes and work out a constitution for the country to be a platform for the Syrian state, which was liberated from the yoke of the Ottoman occupation.

With the aim of facilitating research for those interested, researchers and readers, and providing a scientific platform which contributes to enriching the history of this ancient authority, Director of Documents and Archives of the People’s Assembly Huda Al-Shehadeh recently published her new book under the title “the Memory of the Syrian Parliament” .

The publication of the book coincided with the centenary of the founding of the Syrian Parliament and sought to preserve the Syrian parliamentary history.

The book, which came as a documentary study and was issued by the Syrian General Organization of Books , aims to introduce the history of the Syrian Parliament, which was one of the first Arab parliaments, to members of the People’s Assembly and to familiarize them with its role in the historical steps it witnessed that changed the Syrian political policy and the features of the regional and international system.

The book reveals that the Syrian parliament, through its successive roles, has issued many important laws that serve the interest of the people and the country as the Syrian parliament has faced the damage caused by the French occupation and the governments of military coups.

The book indicated that during this fierce war, members of the first legislative term 2012-2016 and the second 2016 2020 were elected, who performed their duty to the fullest, and this is not strange to the Syrian people .

The book is rich in information about national figures and individuals who have successively occupied positions within this legislative authority , documenting this with pictures and documents without ignoring the modifications and developments that the People’s Assembly witnessed over the decades, which has continued to this day.

It is noteworthy that Huda Al-Shehadeh holds a degree in English literature from Damascus University. She has participated in many parliamentary conferences, such as the Inter-Parliamentary Union, the Arab Inter-Parliamentary Union .

Al-Shehadeh has several research and studies, including a study on the Syrian Parliament’s most important achievements, and a book of the People’s Assembly members’ guide for the first and second legislative terms.
