With the participation of Syria, the UN General Assembly begins its general discussion of the seventy-sixth session

New York (ST): With the participation of the delegation of the Syrian Arab Republic headed by Dr. Faisal Miqdad, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates, the general debate of the 76th session of the United Nations General Assembly started today.

In his speech to the member states, United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres pointed out that there are six major divisions that require the international community to bridge, foremost of which is achieving peace, especially in light of the recent conflicts the world is witnessing in addition to the issue of climate change.

With regard to the topic of the global vaccination scheme against the virus (Covid 19), Guterres stressed the need for overcoming the pandemic to include everyone and everywhere, criticizing the gap between rich and poor countries, explaining the importance of vaccinating 70 percent of the world’s population by the middle of next year.

The UN Secretary-General pointed to the need to achieve equality between men and women as a necessary change for the benefit of humanity, warning that future generations will inherit the consequences of decisions taken today.

Guterres concluded his speech on the great divisions by referring to the dangers of digital technology today, stressing that it is not science fiction but rather factual reality.

The United Nations General Assembly opened the work of its 76th session, headed by Abdullah Shahid, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Maldives, on the 14th of this month, with the participation of nearly 100 heads of state, prime ministers and foreign ministers , after the interruption it witnessed last year due to the outbreak of the Corona pandemic.
