Global leaders, experts join efforts to accelerate international action on climate change adaptation

Some 50 global leaders have called for accelerating action to face the impacts of climate change, represented in heat waves and droughts, extreme rainfall and floods, storms, wildfires and several other impacts which will become far more severe and powerful.

“The consequences of climate change put people, communities and the global economy at unprecedented risk and pose major new threats to biodiversity and human health,” the Global Center on Adaptation (GCA) said following a dialogue on Monday that brought together political leaders, climate and development experts as well as the former UN Chief Ban Ki-moon and the General Director of the International Monetary Fund.

The participants specified the measures that should be taken during the 26th UN climate change conference (COP26) which will be held in the Scottish city of Glasgow in November, 2021, particularly after revising the adaptation plans to which the United Nations has allocated an annual budget of 100 billion USD.

“Countries are ready for new ambition on adaptation, and they are ready for much scaled up financing for adaptation too. For this, solutions already out there need to be shared and put into place,” Ban Ki-moon, 8th Secretary-General of the United Nations and Chair of the Global Center on Adaptation.
