Syria’s permanent representative to the United Nations Bassam Sabbagh has briefed the UN Security Council on several issues related to the situation in Syria.
He affirmed that the United States and its allies continue hindering the initiatives related to the return of Syrian refugees to their homeland and investing in media disinformation through saying that the suitable circumstances for the refugees’ return are not available.
Addressing the US Security Council on Tuesday, Sabbagh said that Syria continues its efforts to facilitate the return of the refugees to their homeland, pointing out that Syria’s cooperation with friendly countries and the UN and the international organizations has led to the return of a large number of refugees.
Sabbagh clarified that the improvement of living conditions in Syria depends and necessitates lifting the western coercive measures being imposed on the Syrian people.
He in addition talked about humanitarian catastrophe that threatens 1.000.000 citizens in Hasakah province due to repeated cut off of water from Alouk station to the province by the Turkish regime’ terrorist mercenaries.
Sabbagh called on the UN Security council to force the Turkish regime to re-operate the Alouk station and to implement the international agreements related to re-pumping the Euphrates river’s water to return to the agreed upon level.
Moreover, the diplomat called for ending the failed policy of delivering humanitarian aid through borders as it violates Syria’s sovereignty.
Sabbagh also talked about the situation in Daraa, saying that the armed terrorist groups violated truce agreement upon orders from their masters.
“The terrorists in Daraa killed 250 army personnel and policemen, 18 mayors and more than 115 citizens and wounded over 500 military personnel and civilians,” he added.
Sabbagh clarified that the Syrian state handled the files of 3900 wanted gunmen out of 4609, who perpetrated terrorist crimes, and released 1700 prisoners.
He stressed that the reports of the terrorists in Daraa aim to distort the image of the Syrian state, raising the following question:”” Have you ever heard about the terrorists attack on Al-Mataeyeh town where 40 citizens were martyred and wounded and 6 houses and water and electricity resources were completely destroyed.”
He affirmed that such incidents are not mentioned in the reports issued by certain states on the situation in Daraa province.
He criticized the silence of some UN member states over the practices of the US and Turkish occupation forces and their terrorist and separatist groups in Syria, affirming that these practices violate international law.
Sabbagh stressed that Syria continues to follow up on the efforts of UN Special Envoy for Syria, Geir Pedersen, and renews its commitment to a political process led by Syria.
He thanked Russia and Iran for their contribution in facilitating the 16th round of the Committee of Discussing the Constitution.
