Russia’s Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Vershinin has stressed the need to provide depoliticized humanitarian assistance to the Syrian people based on commitment to Syria’s sovereignty, independence, unity and territorial integrity.
In a statement on Friday, the Russian Foreign Ministry said that Vershinin and the UN Chief’s Special Envoy for Syria Geir Pedersen discussed in a phone call the situation in Syria, emphasizing the importance of an objective assessment of the situation in the country.
Vershinin and Pedersen “discussed in detail the current situation on the ground in Syria and the tasks of advancing the political process, carried out by the Syrians themselves with the support of the UN,” the Ministry clarified.
“The Russian side noted the importance of an objective assessment of the situation in the various regions of the Syrian Arab Republic, the imperative of continuing the fight against terrorists, depoliticized humanitarian assistance based on commitment to sovereignty, independence, unity and territorial integrity of the country in full conformity with the UN mandate, spelled out in Resolution 2254 of the UN Security Council,” the Ministry said.
In another phone call, Vershinin and the Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator of the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) Martin Griffiths discussed humanitarian aid to Syria and Ethiopia, the Russian Foreign Ministry also said.
“The two sides discussed key issues of the constructive cooperation between Russia and the OCHA with special focus on humanitarian issues and the current situation in Syria and Ethiopia,” the ministry made it clear.
“Both sides stressed the necessity of humanitarian assistance to these countries on the basis of strict compliance with the United Nations guiding principles in coordination with the legitimate government,” the ministry pointed out.
